Department of Biology
The Master of Science (MS) degree in Integrative Biological Diversity blends the biological and environmental sciences with current social issues in order to train students to assess, manage, and think critically about biodiversity issues. The Integrative Biological Diversity degree combines graduate courses with faculty expertise across the Connecticut State Colleges and University (CSCU) System. Students have opportunities to collaborate with partnering organizations to engage in real-world practice. This program is suitable for secondary education teachers, current environmental science professionals, and others who are interested in a graduate-level biology degree that focuses on the ecological, physiological, and natural history of biological organisms.

The Master of Science in Integrated Biological Diversity at Western Connecticut University was a newer option for students when I was looking for a Masters program in Environmental Sciences. I liked the forward thinking in the concept of this program and I chose to enter it because of the flexibility, variety of course offerings and enormous amounts of contacts and resources available to students. I would recommend this program for those reasons and additionally because of the commitment of the faculty, who are truly open and available to students. Their desire for their students to be successful, not just in the academics of the program, but to truly understand and learn, is obvious from the first day.
The program can be completed either part-time or full-time, and students from my cohort have, and are doing, both. The variety of classes was attractive and even before COVID-19 restrictions, there were opportunities to engage in classes online, which was a big plus for those of us who work full time.
In addition, the internship opportunities were seemingly limitless. If there is a student with an interest in something that is not currently available, they work to help get you in contact with someone in your field of interest. You could do work on a small local stream issue that you are concerned about or apply for an internship at a field station in the Bahamas involved in shark research.
I think students that are looking for not just the educational component - which is definitely here from some really knowledgeable scientists- but those who are seeking the hands on experience which is really crucial to working in this field, will get so much out of this program.
The Masters program at Western Connecticut State University is a newer program (first full cohort beginning in 2019) meaning that there are opportunities to choose the direction of your degree. The program includes thesis/non-thesis options and there are a variety of very interesting and useful courses with additional courses in development. Perhaps most striking to me was the investment of... Perhaps most striking to me was the investment of faculty in student success at this institution. Faculty are endlessly ready to help you however they can, and push you further in scientific knowledge, outreach with other stakeholders in a given project, or on a career path. My experience with this program was excellent, and I would highly recommend the program to others.
