Department of Biology
The Department of Biology at UNCG is committed to providing excellent and comprehensive instruction at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Biology students are encouraged to gain research experience through independent study with a faculty member, and to develop strong communication skills with writing- and speaking- intensive lecture and laboratory courses. Graduates of the Biology program at UNCG find employment in a wide range of fields and are well prepared for further study in graduate school or in health related professions such as medicine, dentistry, and veterinary medicine.
The Master of Science in Biology requires completion of at least 30 semester hours of graduate level course work and research hours. Generally, students take 15 hours of formal courses and 15 hours of research and thesis. During the first semester students rotate through three faculty labs and by the beginning of the second semester select a thesis advisor. Some incoming students may have already made arrangements to complete their thesis research with a particular faculty member prior to beginning the program. Students complete a research project and write a thesis.
