Department of Urban Forestry and Natural Resources
The Department of Urban Forestry and Natural Resources at SU offers a Bachelor of Science, M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Urban Forestry. The curricula are designed to prepare graduates who can evaluate, plan, and resolve problems of urban forest ecosystem and contribute to the environmental well-being of urban societies. Urban Forestry Program at Southern University was established in 1992 as the first B.S. degree program in urban forestry in the nation with support from USDA-FS and LA Board of Regents. The MS degree in urban forestry was approved in 1998, and PhD degree in urban forestry in 2004. Today, the Department of Urban Forestry and Natural Resources at SU has the most comprehensive Urban Forestry Higher Education Program in the nation and has been recognized as a leader in graduating the diverse, talented next generation of urban forestry and natural resources professionals for the country. The Urban Forestry Program is a non-duplication program in the State of Louisiana and has been designated as Department of Excellence through Faculty Excellence by the LA Board of Regents. The program is equipped with excellent faculty and the state-of-the-art research and educational facility. The program has contributed significantly to minority education and workforce in urban forestry and natural resources in the nation.
